Why this piece works for practice

Hot Cross Buns uses exactly three notes in a descending line and then drills each of them four times. It looks trivial and it is exactly the point: with only three notes you can hear every flaw in your timing. It is the first tune most piano methods teach, for good reason.

How to practise it

  1. Play u y t three times slowly and make the descent smooth, not bumpy.
  2. Then play t four times in a row — keep the pulse absolutely even; this is the part that exposes rushing.
  3. Put the two halves together and try it twice as fast without losing evenness.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Hot Cross Buns on the piano?

Play E D C twice (u y t in our keyboard letters), then C four times, D four times, and finish with E D C again.

Why do piano teachers start with Hot Cross Buns?

Three notes across two fingers' reach leaves no room to hide uneven timing, so it is a very quick check on whether the pulse is steady.
