Why this piece works for practice

The ABC song shares its tune with Twinkle Twinkle, which is exactly why it makes a great second exercise. Teachers use the same fingers for a different purpose: the letters A to Z are sung in a slightly different rhythm, so you practise keeping time while the notes stay familiar. If you can play one, you can already play the other.

How to practise it

  1. Play the melody once with the letters in your head, then once out loud while singing A-B-C.
  2. Notice that the third phrase (h h g g f f d) sits a step lower than the first — that shape is the whole trick.
  3. Play it for a child and let them sing along; keeping up with a singer forces you to hold a steady tempo.
